Walsall College is expanding the facilities used for teaching plumbing at its Green Lane campus, following a huge rise in students enrolling on courses this year. The college has seen an increase of around 50 per cent in students starting on to its Level 1, 2 and 3 Plumbing qualifications over the last two years. The 300 m² plumbing workshop has been extended by another 300 m² to create more space for students to develop their skills in an industry simulated environment. The complete area will include further specially created kitchen and bathroom bays with suspended floors to simulate site conditions, a range of plumbing tools and equipment, bespoke work benches and an interactive board so tutors can explain the technicalities and complexities of the installations.

The college’s Level 2 Multi Skills Construction students have been enlisted to help put the finishing touches on the workshop, including preparing and painting the walls and woodwork, as part of their work related study units. Level 2 Carpentry students have also purpose built the workbenches and storage areas for tools and equipment.

The new Plumbing workshop space will enable more students to carry out practical activities, including installing and repairing heating and water systems and gain the skills they need to progress their careers in the sector.

Curriculum Manager for Plumbing at Walsall College, Andy Thompson, said: “It’s great news that more school leavers as well as adults are choosing to pursue a career in plumbing, as there is currently a large skills gap in the sector.

“Following a plumbing career will not only help to revive our local economy but it could also be a very lucrative path for students to follow, as salaries for qualified plumbers tend start around £35,000.”

Curriculum Manager for Construction at Walsall College, Barry Hill: “This project has given around 18 Construction students the opportunity to put their stamp on the workshop and gain valuable experience of working to a real industry brief while putting the skills they are learning in their own dedicated workshops in to practice.”

Walsall College is holding its next open day on Wednesday 23rd November, 4-8pm, and is encouraging prospective students looking to start courses in September 2017, to come and secure their places now to avoid disappointment.
