Themed events organised by HND Hospitality Management students at Walsall College, which have given students their first taste of running events, come with a promise of great food and entertainment. The broad themes include a vintage afternoon tea party (20th April), Spanish night with tapas (27th April) and Star Wars themed evening (4th May) with an international buffet.

Each event, taking place at the college’s £11m Hub, will include live entertainment and all the proceeds raised will go to charity.

Victoria Lynn, Lecturer in Hospitality Management at Walsall College, said: “The students have come up with some great themes for their events and thought about all the little details including props, table centre pieces and entertainment to ensure guests enjoy a great time.

“This is all part of the event management unit on the Level 5 course, and working in small groups students are responsible for the entire organisation of the event, from choosing the theme, allocating a budget, deciding on a menu, marketing and arranging the entertainment

“This also forms part of their assessment and students will be marked on their organisational skills, attendance at the event and the amount of money raised for charity.”

Student, Charis Bellerson, 23, who has helped to organise the Spanish Night, said: “I have really enjoyed this project and have put a lot of work into making sure guests get a very authentic experience during the evening. We have organised a Spanish guitarist to play live and all guests will receive a complimentary glass of Sangria.

“The whole experience has made me more determined to pursue a career in event management. I have already started applying for jobs and it’s great to be able to give an example of an event I have planned.”
