In just 100 days, the Birmingham 2022 Festival will burst to life in the heart of Birmingham city centre with a free spectacular outdoor production featuring a cast of over 300 performers.

On 17 March 2022, Wondrous Stories, by world renowned and Leamington Spa based dance-circus company, Motionhouse, will open in Centenary Square with free performances every evening until 20 March 2022.

Running from March to September 2022 as part of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, the Birmingham 2022 Festival will feature hundreds of creative commissions across the region, benefitting hundreds of artists and thousands of participants, communities and audiences.

The Birmingham 2022 Festival is a six-month cultural programme starting in March 2022. It will harness the moment of the Games to shine a spotlight on the region’s cultural sector. Audacious, playful, and inclusive, the festival will connect people, time and place in a programme designed to entertain, engage, and embrace audiences, whilst positively disrupting and inspiring lasting change.

With the aim of engaging 2.5 million people, both in person and online, the Festival is designed to reflect the people of the region, exploring heritage, diversity, and youth.

Delivering around 250 commissioned projects, there will be approximately 150 community-led projects funded by Birmingham City Council through the Creative City Grants and around 100 new works from a wide range of artists including dance, drama, and visual arts projects.

The Spirit of 2012 has generously funded Critical Mass, an ambitious project creating a young and inclusive cast of dancers who will perform throughout the Festival and the Games’ ceremonies.

The Festival officially opens with Wondrous Stories – an incredible spectacle of dance, circus and aerial display from 17 to 20 March. Free to all, the show will also be livestreamed around the globe.
