Whilst the Birmingham Bears entertain local rivals Worcestershire Rapids at Edgbaston in the NatWest T20 Blast, a new chapter in the city's cricketing history will begin as the first match is played at the Edgbaston Foundation Community Ground at Portland Road, Smethwick.
Warwickshire County Cricket Club will play a 35 over match between its Under 10s and Under 11s boys teams at the new ground, which was formerly home to the Mitchells & Butlers Sports Club and was acquired by the Club from Persimmon Homes in 2013.
Colin Povey, Chief Executive of Warwickshire County Cricket Club, said: "There has been a substantial amount of work done by the groundsman Rob Franklin, Development Officer Jonathan Blakeman and many volunteers to restore the ground to its former glory, ready for its first match in more than 20 years.
"The Portland Road ground hosted 13 First Class matches from 1931-1961 and has the potential to stage more in the future when Edgbaston hosts key matches in the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2019.
"However, our immediate plans are for this renamed Edgbaston Foundation Community Ground to be the home of our Development of Excellence programme for young cricketers and support the growth of cricket within the local community.
"In 2015 we will see several of our county junior teams play matches at the Edgbaston Foundation Community Ground, whilst our senior Warwickshire women's team will play Kent on Sunday June 21.
Next year, the ground will stage many more fixtures as it becomes home of our second team, but also hosts several finals of local competitions in the recreational game."
Warwickshire CCC made the Edgbaston Foundation Community Ground a focus for this year's NatWest CricketForce, with more than 30 members of office staff, playing staff and committee members volunteering to paint, border and tidy the site.
Warwickshire Under 11s versus Warwickshire Under 10s gets underway at the Edgbaston Foundation Community Ground at 11am on Friday 22 May.
