To kick off the new school year, Year 7 learners from Cockshut Hill School took part in an inspiring day of team building at the scenic Beaudesert Activity Centre in Cannock Chase.
Cockshut Hill, which is part of the Summit Learning Trust, put on the experience to help the new learners settle into secondary school life with confidence and connection. The trip was fully funded by the school, making it completely free for parents and carers.
This reflects the school’s commitment to equity and inclusion, ensuring every learner can access enriching experiences that support their personal and social development. Having joined from over 20 different primary schools, this was a valuable opportunity for learners to bond with new classmates, supported by their form tutors and pastoral leaders.
The day was packed with exciting outdoor activities, including the climbing wall, go-karts, archery, and even tomahawk throwing. Each was designed to encourage teamwork, resilience, and communication in a fun and relaxed setting.
The impact of the day was clear in the voices of the learners themselves. Yusuf said that the climbing taught him “never to give up”, whilst Sydney said: “I loved the tomahawks, I've never tried it before, it was such good fun!”
Staff also reflected on the success of the trip. Claire Lane, Pastoral Leader for Year 7, said:
“It was wonderful to see our learners supporting each other, laughing together, and stepping out of their comfort zones.
“This trip has really helped them begin their journey with a sense of belonging.” Principal Jody Clarke praised the initiative: “We know how important it is for our learners to feel connected and confident as they begin their secondary school journey.
“This trip gave them the chance to build friendships, discover new strengths, and create memories that will stay with them. We’re proud to offer experiences like this that are inclusive, meaningful, and completely free to families.”
The energy, laughter, and encouragement shared throughout the day were a powerful reminder of how shared experiences can shape a positive start to secondary school life. The school is incredibly proud of how its Year 7 learners embraced the day with such enthusiasm.
