Birmingham’s John Taylor Hospice needs volunteers to help out in its day hospice for a few hours per week in support of care staff. New for 2016, the Grange Road social enterprise is trialling running the day hospice on Fridays, in addition to its Monday, Tuesday and Thursday groups. Volunteer Patricia Rogers, who lives in Erdington, helps out every Friday. “I’m new to the team myself, and already I’ve found that coming here is something I really look forward to at the end of each week,” said Patricia.
“It’s a great time for new volunteers to join the day hospice because Friday’s group is just getting going. It means you can be a part of it from the beginning as it develops, getting to know the patients and making friends.”
From arts and crafts to theatre and games, John Taylor’s day hospice is a hub of activity for visitors as well as providing an opportunity to access other hospice services.
For 45-year-old Elizabeth Warren, spending her Friday at John Taylor Hospice goes a long way to improving her well-being.
“I used to struggle with anxiety and depression, but I really look forward to coming to the day hospice now,” said Elizabeth. “The team is just brilliant here – I’m very grateful to them.”
Day hospice manager Paddy Breen said: “Opening for an additional day means that we can offer more choice to our patients and do more to help local families. It’s good because now more people can visit us and take part in everything that this warm and welcoming space has to offer.”
John Taylor Hospice receives more than 200 referrals for all of its services every month. Volunteers from across Birmingham help support its care in a variety of ways.
“Every moment matters, whether it’s in minutes, months, hours or days,” said Paddy. “As a volunteer in our day hospice, you’ll help meet and greet our visitors, assist with serving teas and coffees, and take part in activities.”
Members of the public with good interpersonal skills, a passion for palliative care and a little time to spare are urged to step forward.
