Year 6 learners at Erdington Hall Primary School, part of the Summit Learning Trust, were transported back to wartime Britain last term during a memorable and hands-on history workshop delivered by Past Presents.
As part of the interactive session, the children dressed in period clothing, handled authentic artefacts and explored what daily life was like for children during the Second World War. The workshop provided a powerful insight into the challenges and experiences of young people during this significant period in history.
Through engaging activities and real-life objects, children were able to deepen their understanding of wartime Britain in a way that brought their learning vividly to life. Erdington Hall’s history curriculum brings the past vividly to life through a carefully sequenced journey from ancient civilisations to modern Britain, helping children build a clear understanding of cause and consequence, and how societies change over time.
Through engaging topics, rich texts and enquiry-led learning, children develop key skills such as analysing evidence, asking thoughtful questions and making connections between the past and present. The curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity and deepen cultural understanding, ensuring children not only learn about history but think like historians as they explore how the past continues to shape the world around them.
Jenni Downes, Principal at Erdington Hall Primary School said: “This was a fantastic opportunity for our children to experience history beyond the classroom.
“The hands-on approach helped them to truly connect with the past and gain a deeper appreciation of what life was like during the war.” The Summit Learning Trust family is currently made up of three secondary schools, five primary schools and a sixth form college educating around 8000 learners.
