The Leader of Caerphilly Council has announced that proposed changes to school transport arrangements for Secondary School pupils will not go ahead.

The matter was due to be considered by a meeting of Scrutiny Committee and Cabinet over the coming weeks, but a decision has now been made not to proceed with the plans. “We have listened carefully to the feedback from the community, as well as considering the findings of recent risk assessments undertaken along the various walking routes,” said Councillor Sean Morgan.

Originally, the Council aimed to align all school transport distances for Primary and Secondary schools with Welsh Government’s statutory criteria. Earlier this year, it was confirmed that Primary pupils living over 1.5 miles from school would continue to receive free transport, following public consultation.

Cllr Sean Morgan added: “The decision not to make changes to Secondary school routes clearly demonstrates that this Labour administration is responding positively to feedback from the community.

“Just as we maintained our current transport policy for Primary pupils, we’re now doing the same for Secondary pupils. Caerphilly remains one of only two Welsh councils offering school transport distances that are more generous than Welsh Government requirements.”
