With the present incumbent stating that ‘Spectre’ might signal the end of his spell as a secret service agent, murmurs are about that Idris Elba might succeed Daniel Craig and take up the mantle as the new 007. After starring in four films, Craig is ready to move on from the Bond franchise with speculation that the London-born award-winning star, Elba, is ready to take-up the baton.
But, as many critics and pundits are expecting the ‘Luther’ and ‘Wired’ star to fill the void, the author of the next James Bond novel has declared he does not think Idris is the right actor for the part – though he insists “it’s not a colour issue.”
Anthony Horowitz’s novel ‘Trigger Mortis’ is the latest novel to join the 007 franchise, but while Horowitz is passionate about Daniel Craig in the role of the amorous spy he is less enthused about bookies’ favourite Elba to replace him.
He said: “Idris Elba is a terrific actor, but I can think of other Black actors who would do it better.”
In the past, Idris has made no secret of his desire to play the spy, recently saying: “Yes I would play James Bond, if it was offered to me, absolutely.
Even though he now thinks he’ll never play the part, Elba hit back at claims he is not British enough for the role. “I was born here. I was born in England, born and raised,” he says.
Horowitz names Adrian Lester, star of Hustle amongst others, as his preferred choice.
