Birmingham Bulls RUFC, the city’s pioneering inclusive rugby club, have announced the launch of its new touch rugby team, the Longhorns.
They have started training at Yardley & District RFC and will train every Monday 7:00pm – 8:30pm. The Longhorns aim to offer a fully inclusive environment for everyone to enjoy rugby, with no limitations – particularly welcoming members of the trans community and others seeking a non-contact, accessible version of the sport.
The creation of the Longhorns is a significant step in Birmingham Bulls RUFC's ongoing mission to provide a space where rugby can be enjoyed by all, regardless of gender, identity, age, or fitness level. Chair of Birmingham Bulls RUFC, David Cumpston said “We can now finally offer a truly inclusive environment for everyone to participate in rugby with no limitations as to who can participate.
“The Longhorns allow people to engage in a fun, competitive sport while feeling safe and supported.” Touch rugby is a fast-paced, non-contact version of rugby, making it accessible to a broader range of players.
The game emphasizes teamwork, passing, and running lines, offering a low-risk and inclusive opportunity for participants to experience the sport. The benefits of touch rugby include:
- Inclusivity and Accessibility: With no tackling involved, touch rugby appeals to players who may be put off by the physicality of traditional rugby. It’s open to everyone – from seasoned players to those new to the sport – and fosters a welcoming environment for people of all genders and fitness levels.
- Skill Development: The non-contact nature of the game allows players to sharpen their rugby fundamentals such as passing, running, and strategic decision-making without the risk of injury. It’s a great way for anyone to build confidence in their abilities while still experiencing the thrill of the sport.
- Injury Recovery and Maintenance: For athletes recovering from injuries or wanting to stay active during the off-season, touch rugby provides a lower-impact alternative that keeps them connected to rugby. Players can maintain their fitness without the concerns of aggravating previous injuries.
- Fitness and Retention: Touch rugby is a high-energy, fast-paced game that improves cardiovascular fitness and endurance. For existing players, it’s an excellent way to stay fit and engaged with rugby throughout the year, keeping players connected to the club in the off-season.
The Longhorns are part of Birmingham Bulls’ ongoing efforts to create a space for everyone to enjoy rugby. Families, younger players, and individuals new to the game are encouraged to join. The team offers a unique opportunity to be part of a vibrant and inclusive community.
Founded in 2011, Birmingham Bulls RUFC is one of the leading inclusive rugby teams in the UK. The club’s mission has always been to break down barriers to participation in rugby, welcoming individuals from the LGBTQ+ community and beyond.
The Bulls have built a strong reputation for their commitment to inclusivity, fairness, and respect, and the launch of the Longhorns touch rugby team is a continuation of these values. The Longhorns touch rugby team trains at Yardley & District RFC every Monday from 7:00pm to 8:30pm.
All are welcome to join, whether you are completely new to rugby or an experienced player looking for a fun and inclusive way to stay fit. Sessions will focus on teamwork, skill development, and having fun in a supportive environment.
