Delivered in partnership with the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI), the scholarship launches in September 2025.

Leeds Beckett University is delighted to announce it’s partnering with the RTPI and British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) to offer the first postgraduate scholarship in its history. The scholarship will be for one full-time Master’s student taking the MA Town and Regional Planning at Leeds Beckett’s School of Built Environment, Engineering and Computing, and will be a one-time award of £10,100, covering the full course fee.

It forms part of a government and industry push to boost capacity in the planning system and to train more town planners. The government’s spring budget committed £3m to a skills and education programme, delivered by the RTPI.

In addition to the scholarship funding, the program will also look to provide work experience and mentoring opportunities. Recipients of the scholarship will also be helped to work in a council planning role for a minimum of two years upon completion of their studies.

Simon Creer, Director of Communications and External Affairs at RTPI welcomed the scholarship funding: “This new full-fee scholarship is a real game-changer, and it has great potential.

“Planning is an exciting career for anyone looking to shape their world and their communities. I’d encourage anyone who is interested to seek more information about this scheme.”

Charlotte Morphet, Senior Lecturer in Planning at Leeds Beckett, added: “Leeds Beckett University is proud to offer the BCC Scholarship, widening access to postgraduate study on the MA in Town and Regional Planning.

“At a time when local government urgently needs more professional planners, this support is more crucial than ever.” You can find out more about the MA in Town and Regional Planning or join the 26 March Postgraduate Open Day.
