Bull Ring Markets Operations Manager, Amanda Prosser-Davies, was presented with a sought-after diploma at the National Association of British Markets Authorities (NABMA) Conference in Birmingham . Amanda, who runs the city’s bustling Bull Ring and Wholesale markets, received her Diploma in Market Administration from Local Government Minister Marcus Jones MP during the event, held at the city’s Council House.
The diploma, which is awarded by the Institute of Place Management and Manchester Metropolitan University, aims to provide market operators with a specialist skill set.
Amanda, who joined Birmingham City Council as a food safety officer in 2008, became responsible for the day-to-day running of the Indoor, Rag, Open and Wholesale markets in February 2014.
She said: “Every day is different but often involves liaising with traders, dealing with operational issues, looking at budgets and forward planning, especially with the new Birmingham Smithfield development on the horizon.
“I try and see stall holders across our markets about three times a week, as it’s important to maintain contact them, as well as the various partners we work with, such as West Midlands Police.
“Completing this diploma course has provided me with better insight into issues facing our markets and how to deal with them, because you really do need a wide range of skills for this job.”
Before presenting four NABMA delegates, including Amanda, with their diplomas – the Minister was shown around the Bull Ring Markets and met a selection of traders.
Marcus Jones, Minister for High Street and Markets, later told the conference: “It is good to see that the ambitious plans Birmingham City Council have for the markets here are now being realised.
“I was interested to hear about the commitment of the council, traders and the local community to modernise the markets here in the heart of the city. They want to remain a key part of Birmingham’s retail offer – today and in the future.”
After collecting her certificate at the NABMA conference, Amanda spoke to delegates about the future plans for Birmingham’s markets, including the Smithfield development and the relocation of the Wholesale Market to a new base in Witton.
