Sandwell Council's leader has welcomed a government U-turn over providing free school meals to those eligible over the summer holidays.

The government announced this week they would fund free school meals after a decision taken recently meant thousands of families would be without the provision.

The government was put under significant pressure from high profile campaigns including Manchester United footballer, Marcus Rashford.

Councillor Yvonne Davies, leader of Sandwell Council, said: "I welcome this U-turn and it will mean all the difference to struggling families in Sandwell to know that they have help over the summer holidays.

"With the majority of children not going to school at the moment, it is important families get extra help with providing a meal they would usually get for free during the school day.

"I want to thank Marcus Rashford who has used his own very personal experience of childhood poverty to help to ensure children don't go hungry this summer."
