A housebuilder has empowered schoolchildren in Berkshire to champion positivity and take a stand against bullying through art.

David Wilson Homes has recently donated rocks and art equipment to Key Stage 1 pupils at Fir Tree School in Newbury, local to its Lapwing Green development in Speen. The students were given a unique task to transform ordinary rocks into canvases with colourful expressions.

The young artists embraced their mission with enthusiasm, adorning the rocks with uplifting messages and lively pictures, which have now been strategically placed around the school gardens. Mike Steer, Headteacher at Fir Tree School, said: “The children worked really hard to create positive and kind messages that were both inspiring and colourful.”

The pupils painted their rocks to coincide with Time to Talk Day (5th February), which is an annual campaign organised by Mind to encourage people to talk openly about mental health. This initiative aims to break the stigma around mental health, highlight the importance of checking in on friends, family and colleagues, and promote a culture of understanding and support within communities.

Campbell Gregg, Managing Director at David Wilson Homes Southern, said: “We are delighted to support Fir Tree School in such a positive and creative way.

“Time to Talk Day reminds us that sometimes the simplest gestures – like picking up a paintbrush or starting a conversation – can make a huge difference to someone’s day. These colourful rocks are more than just art. they are a symbol of kindness and the power of talking openly about mental health.”
