Walsall College Media student, Amy Phillips, has seen her production skills recognised by Channel 4, one of the biggest names and employers in the industry. After taking part in a media workshop and winning a regional short film competition, Amy, 17, has been invited to attend a Channel 4 Experience Day, which includes a tour of its headquarters.

The broadcaster is holding a national outreach programme of skills workshops and challenges, C4 Pop-Up, taking place across the UK to promote careers within the media industry and to identify undiscovered talent.

Aimed at 16-25 years-olds, the workshops focus on TV production, marketing and digital skills, and are facilitated by MyKindaFuture tutors and Channel 4 freelancers. They challenge the young people to work in small groups to produce a media product in a day, based on the theme of ‘pride’ and the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Amy, a BTEC Level 3 student at Walsall College, was one of 150 young people from across the UK selected to attend the workshop in Wolverhampton on Thursday 17th September, which was held at North East Wolverhampton Academy.

Following presentations to a panel of C4 judges, a winning team was selected from each of the creative workshops and the overall winners will be announced in January 2016.

Amy said: “The Channel 4 workshop was a really great experience. It gave me a massive insight into the industry with a major company and tips on how to get a foot in the door.

“I enjoyed using the skills I have learnt so far on my college course on a real life brief. Having my group’s film chosen as the winning film from the TV production session by industry experts has given me a huge boost of confidence and fingers crossed it does well in the final round.

“After college my plan is to go to university and then pursue a career in the TV and film sector, so having this experience behind will hopefully give me a bit of an advantage.”
