A group of 30 students from Haringey sixth forms enjoyed a taste of life beneath Oxford’s dreaming spires at a special trip to the university.
Students from Highgate Wood, Fortismere, Haringey Sixth Form, Alexandra Park, St Thomas More and Greig City Academy joined the ‘Thinking Differently’ day at Lady Margaret Hall.
They enjoyed a series of lectures and discussions, including hearing from Principal Alan Rusbridger on “fake news”; a physics lecture on the Hadron Collier by Prof Todd Huffman, and a poetry seminar by professor and Vice Principal Helen Barr.
The talks were followed by the chance to share lunch and top-tips with current undergraduates, including pointers on how to apply for a place at Oxford and first-hand tales of life at university.
Alan Rusbridger said:
“We were delighted to welcome Haringey students to LMH and were really impressed with their enthusiasm, curiosity and love of learning.
“LMH is dedicated to making sure young people from Haringey know about the opportunities available to them so they can make the best decisions about their future.”
Thinking Differently is a joint scheme between Haringey Council and Lady Margaret Hall to help students to experience Oxford life.
LMH Principal Alan Rusbridger visited the borough in January, and a team from the college will return in coming months to talk more about the university application process.
