Medtech company Eyoto teams up with Birmingham Optical to expand access to remote eye care

Birmingham-based medtech company Eyoto has announced its joined forces with Birmingham Optical to expand access to high quality eye care.

Birmingham Optical is a leading supplier of ophthalmic equipment and optical solutions in the UK supporting eye professionals across the health sector. Through this new partnership, the company will be supporting Eyoto with the distribution and promotion of its flagship automated slit lamp device, bringing innovative remote eye care technology to a wide network of healthcare providers. Eyoto’s pioneering automated slit lamp device is the world’s only automated and fully remote 4K slit lamp that uses AI-enabled automation to allow non-clinically trained staff to record any exam procedure required for asynchronous clinical review, or offer full remote control allowing clinicians to deliver expert eye care from anywhere in the world.

Designed to provide consistent, high-quality assessments across multiple sites and in various care settings, it helps providers expand access to eye care, improve workflow efficiency and enhance patient experience through more scalable and sustainable service models. The slit lamp reduces training requirements and reliance on locum staff, while freeing clinicians to focus on diagnosis and treatment, rather than image acquisition. Tony Veverka, CEO at Eyoto, said: “This partnership is an important step forward for Eyoto as we continue to scale our business.

“Birmingham Optical’s well-established position within the optical industry and deep understanding of the market makes the company a natural partner for us. Together, this is a fantastic opportunity to expand the adoption of remote and technology-enabled eye care and support new models of eye care that give clinicians greater flexibility, while ensuring quality eye examinations are accessible to everyone, no matter where they are.” Rory Harrison, Operations Director at Birmingham Optical, added: “Aetheia by Eyoto brings 4K optics to deliver exceptional image quality, while retaining the full range of standard slit lamp techniques.

“Its automated sequence captures examinations consistently every time, regardless of who is operating it, with every image stored for review, referral and audit. The result is a practice that can see more patients, across more locations, with consistent clinical quality and a clear audit trail, all from one compact instrument that sits on a standard optical table and looks entirely familiar to the patient. Very few instruments have the potential to maintain high standards of clinical quality and improve commercial capacity at the same time.

“Aetheia by Eyoto does both, which is precisely why it’s a great addition to the Birmingham Optical portfolio.” A recent study by Eyoto of 119 patients across two clinics using its automated slit lamp found that examination times were reduced by around 40% from 7.8 minutes during initial training to just 4.4 minutes with routine use. These results demonstrated how automation can standardise imaging across multiple sites and free up experienced clinicians to focus on diagnosis and treatment.

Eyoto will be showcasing alongside Birmingham Optical at ESCRS London from 11th-15th September. The team will be on stand D.311 at Excel demonstrating its automated slip lamp and offering free eye examinations and demos. With over 60 years of experience, Birmingham Optical is a key supplier in the optical industry providing equipment, services and expertise.
