Birmingham school recognised for giving every student a chance to make music
Four Dwellings Secondary School, in Birmingham has received the Music Mark of Recognition for Dedication & Improvement, recognising its commitment to inclusive music education.
Every student has the opportunity to learn an instrument for free, with lessons available in piano, brass, singing, drums, woodwind and guitar alongside the school’s music curriculum. The recognition highlights the work of Ms Lovatt, the school’s Head of Music, and her commitment to giving every student the chance to take part in music, whatever their background or previous experience.
Music Mark, the UK Association for Music Education, runs the national recognition scheme, which highlights schools’ commitment to music education and the steps they are taking to develop their provision. The school’s music curriculum gives students opportunities to develop their skills in performing, composing and listening to music from a range of styles and cultures.
Students can also learn instruments with specialist music teachers and take part in public performances throughout the year. Ms Lovatt, Head of Music at Lift Four Dwellings Secondary, said: "It’s lovely to see students trying different instruments and discovering what they enjoy.
“Making music gives them a chance to express themselves and achieve something they can feel proud of. Offering lessons free of charge means they can try an instrument without cost getting in the way.
“There’s nothing more pleasing than seeing them grow in confidence, both musically and as people." Claire Stoneman, Principal at Lift Four Dwellings Secondary, said: “We want music to be at the heart of school life at Lift Four Dwellings.
“It offers so much more than learning to play an instrument. It can build confidence, encourage creativity and bring people together.
“I’m incredibly proud of our students and grateful to Ms Lovatt for her dedication to making music an opportunity for everyone. This recognition is a lovely acknowledgement of the work taking place across our school.”
