Moseley School and Sixth Form launches engagement on proposed move to West Midlands Academy Trust, with School community invited to share views

Moseley School and Sixth Form has today launched a formal engagement period on a proposal for the school to join West Midlands Academy Trust.

Parents, carers, staff and local stakeholders are being invited to share their views between 5 and 23 October before the remaining decisions are taken. The proposal follows the Department for Education's conclusion that Moseley should join an academy trust and its identification of WMAT as the preferred trust for the school.

WMAT is a local South Birmingham trust bringing together Hall Green School, Kings Norton Girls' School and Swanshurst School. It has been providing school improvement support to Moseley since March through work commissioned by Birmingham City Council.

The proposed move would allow Moseley to draw on that support for the longer term, with staff and leaders able to work closely with colleagues across WMAT, share expertise and resources, and access greater capacity to support the school's improvement. No final decision has been made.

Due diligence and transition planning are under way, and the proposal remains subject to consideration of the engagement feedback and the necessary approvals from Moseley's Interim Executive Board, the WMAT Board and the DfE. If the proposal progresses and the remaining legal and practical work is completed, Moseley is anticipated to join WMAT on 1 January 2027.

There is no immediate change to the day-to-day running of the school during the engagement and decision-making process. Richard Reeve, Executive Headteacher at Moseley School and Sixth Form, said: "This is an important next step in considering the future of Moseley.

“We have been clear about the scale of improvement needed and equally clear about our determination to give pupils the education and opportunities they deserve. WMAT already knows our school, our staff and our community well through the support it has provided since March.

“Becoming part of the trust would give us access to that expertise and capacity for the longer term and allow us to build on the improvement work already under way. No final decision has been made, and this engagement matters.

“I would encourage parents, carers, colleagues and local partners to read the information and share their views with us before 23 October." Mike Dunn, Chief Executive Officer of West Midlands Academy Trust, said: "We have valued the opportunity to work alongside Moseley since March and have been impressed by the commitment of staff and leaders to securing improvement for pupils.

"WMAT is rooted in South Birmingham and built on schools working together while respecting the identity of each community. We believe there is a strong opportunity to deepen the partnership and provide Moseley with sustained educational and operational support.

"We look forward to hearing the views of the school community and local stakeholders through the engagement process." The engagement closes at the end of Friday 23 October.
