Wolverhampton’s own Olympic champion and five-times Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Anita Lonsbrough MBE, has been unveiled as one of the city’s Batonbearers for the Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay.

Anita, one of Britain's all-time greatest swimmers, will be carrying the Queen’s Baton on July 24 to recognise her lifelong commitment to sport.

Residents and visitors of Birmingham and the West Midlands will be able to exercise alongside Mr. Motivator on Saturday 30 July 2022, with the chance of winning tickets to the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The free public workout will start at 3pm in Victoria Square, Birmingham City Centre shortly after the marathon athletes cross over the finish line.

The Baton, which has already made an epic journey around all Commonwealth nations and territories, will parachute from the skies above East Park in Wolverhampton at 8am precisely on Sunday 24 July, 2022.

Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake will captain the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team for the World Athletics Championships Oregon 2022 which starts on Friday 15 July. A 4x100m relay 2017 world champion, he has been honoured with the role for the Championships.

An inspirational University of Wolverhampton academic has been chosen as one of the Batonbearers for the forthcoming Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022. 

Dr Martin Khechara, an Associate Professor for Engagement in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) in the University’s Faculty of Science and Engineering, will be carrying the baton on part of its journey through the town of Uttoxeter when it reaches the West Midlands on the final leg of its journey to the host City.
