National law firm Clarke Willmott LLP has set up a multi-disciplinary team to look into the legal implications of driverless car technology. Lawyers from Bristol, Birmingham and Taunton are studying the fast-emerging technologies and their potential impact on personal injury, public liability, product liability and contract law. Partner Philip Edwards said: “Driverless cars will open a new dimension on our roads – and it will all happen faster than we think. This is technology that may seem futuristic at the moment but which in reality is not far away.

Driverless car technology could put the brakes on Birmingham’s growing reputation as the Bad Driving capital of the UK. That’s according to lawyers at Clarke Willmott LLP – who have set up a roadside team to assess the impact of new technologies on our road users. Philip Edwards, Serious Injury Partner at Clarke Willmott’s Birmingham office, said: “I was appalled at the suggestion my fellow Brummies are the worst drivers in the country."

In recent months, nearly 4 million vehicles worldwide have been recalled, with both Nissan and Vauxhall recalling faulty models; in 2015, car manufacturers issued more recalls than ever before.  However, a new survey from vehicle history check provider, HPI, reveals that 83% of respondents admitted it hadn’t occurred to them to ask the seller of the vehicle they now own, if the manufacturer had issued a recall notice against it.
