The Lake District is picturesque all year round, but on a crisp winter's day when the mountains are snow-capped it really is truly magical. From Christmas shopping experiences to jolly events and concerts, there is plenty going on in the area this festive season.

Children will love to climb aboard the 'Santa Express' at Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway (selected dates from November 26th), where they will get to meet Father Christmas himself. The jolly fella will also be making appearances at grottos across the county.

Another exciting event is the Ulverston Dickensian Festival (November 26th and 27th), which sees shop-keepers and residents don traditional Victorian dress for a parade and market along the pretty cobbled streets of Ulverston.

There will also be many other occasions to get your Christmas shopping done, with craft fairs, independent gift shops and high street stores galore – all against a stunning backdrop of snow-brushed peaks.

The quaint village of Hawkshead will hold its Christmas Fair on December 3rd and 4th.

When you stay with The Coppermines and Lakes Cottages you'll only need to step foot outside your door to get in the spirit.

Dig out the woolly hat and gloves and take a walk around the beautiful Coniston Water, overlooked by the striking mountains of Coniston Old Man and Dow Crag, and warm yourself up with some hearty food and ale in one of the local pubs before chilling out in front of a roaring open fire that feature in many of The Coppermines properties.

The Coppermines have more than 80 unique self-catering cottages bursting with character and charm, and there is something to suit everyone, from couples to large families to those who want to bring their pets along. Some of the properties sleep up to 22 – so you won't be short on room.

And what's more, there are plenty of cottages available for flexible breaks over the Christmas and New Year period – perfect for get-togethers and those who just want to escape over the season.
