Aston University is calling on all past students and staff nationwide to get in touch and join in its 50th anniversary celebrations, which take place this year. The University hopes that alumni from all over the UK (and beyond) will use the celebrations as a reason to reconnect with former friends and colleagues.
Aston, which received its University Charter on 22nd April 1966, will be marking the anniversary with a series of events, including a celebratory weekend in April – the Big Alumni Reunion. The weekend, 23rd-24th April, will be held at the Aston University campus in the centre of Birmingham. It will include free talks from leading academics and tours of the laboratories, facilities and campus, as well as a Gala Dinner and fireworks display on the Saturday night. Other celebrations in 2016 will include a rededication service to be held at Birmingham Cathedral in September.

Jean Hasson, organiser of the Big Alumni Reunion at Aston University, says:
“Despite good intentions to stay in touch, once people leave University they often move away and end up spread all over the country, indeed the world. The celebrations we have planned to mark this 50th anniversary are the perfect opportunity for people to meet up and reconnect with old university friends and lecturers, hence the Big Alumni Reunion. We look forward to welcoming back our alumni and former staff to help us join in our celebrations this year.”
In the lead up to the anniversary Louise Ciaravella, Campaign Engagement Manager at Aston University, has been collating material for the website www.aston.ac.uk/50.
She adds:
“Many of our alumni and former staff members have already been in touch, and it has been fantastic to hear their stories and memories of time spent at Aston. We want as many people as possible to become involved in these events, either through attending or by sharing their experiences of their time here.”
