In 2024, from 18 July until 17 August the UK celebrates SAHM (South Asian Heritage Month).

South Asia is made up of eight countries: Afghanistan; Bangladesh; Bhutan; India; The Maldives; Nepal; Pakistan and Sri Lanka, with a culture that has had a huge impact in the UK and millions of people of South Asian heritage live in Britain. Lots of people moved to the UK from South Asian countries in the decade following the Second World War and also after Indian independence and Partition in 1947.

SAHM was set up in 2019 to recognise and celebrate the contributions those communities have made to the UK. The theme this year is 'Free to Be Me', celebrating the beauty of simply being yourself.

Communities are encouraged to honour their roots through art, writing, music, fashion, or food, all aspects of heritage worth celebrating. As a community, we reflect on the strength and unity within our South Asian community in the UK and how it positively impacts the lives of British South Asians.
