Black Country Chamber of Commerce held their fourth annual 5 a-side football competition at Powerleague Halesowen. The event was co-ordinated to take place on the eve of the start of the Euro 2016 competition and the teams all played in colours to represent the participating countries. Before the 16 teams kicked off Hannah Fahy from Macmillan Cancer Support introduced Male Cancer Awareness week and some of the teams pledged to put up posters and support Macmillan through a workplace Euro sweepstake.
The first rounds saw a mixture of ‘countries’ play each other with four round robin group games. For the first time the Black Country Chamber of Commerce fielded a side and represented Ukraine. Whilst the team did not reach the quarter finals they made a good account of themselves and had a great time.
The quarter finals saw Ashcroft Components, Avanti Fitted Kitchens Ltd, George Green LLP, Quiss Technology plc, Robinson Brothers, Signs Now UK Ltd, Intouch Games Ltd, and previous winners Walsall College battle it out. In the semi-finals George Green LLP beat Robinson Brothers and Signs Now UK were victors over Intouch Games. The scene was ready for a final between ‘Romania’ and ‘Austria’.
Paul Bennett, Senior Partner at George Green LLP, commented: “It’s been a couple of years since I retired as Chamber President and my legs were telling me the next day that my footballing retirement should have happened at the same time. It was great fun and was impeccably organised by Penny and her team and Chamber members Powerleague. Signs Now UK Ltd were very worthy winners.”
Signs Now UK Ltd were the winning Chamber team in 2015 and this year celebrated as outright winners.
Liam Dunphy from Signs Now UK Ltd commented: “Signs Now are extremely proud to have won the Black Country Chamber 5-a-side competition. It is an extremely fun event which gives you the opportunity to play against other companies and in our case one of our suppliers! The standard was very high this year and we had to work very hard to win. A huge thanks to the Chamber for organising a fun event. We aim to do the treble next year!”
