In the average lifetime, we spend on average 24 years tucked-up in bed – often not getting a good night’s sleep. Yet Birmingham residents have admitted to putting more thought into new clothes, holidays, TVs, washing machines and even sofas than what they bed down on.
According to an independent survey* by online mattress company Leesa, over a third of residents (32%) think picking a holiday destination is more important than choosing a mattress. The same percentage spend more time picking out new clothes than considering their sleeping spot, and 23% prioritise picking out a new shiny TV over anything else.

Just 18% of Brummies said a mattress is one of the top three things they put the most thought into buying – slightly less than the number who carefully consider washing machines (18.3%).

This is despite sleep, or lack of it, being a well documented contributor towards health problems including heart disease and diabetes. Residents might be wise to spend more time considering their mattress, with a fifth (20%) of survey respondents from Birmingham admitting they rarely get a good night’s sleep (1 or 2 nights a week).

One of the biggest culprits, it would seem, is confusion around what makes a good mattress – and how often to replace it.
