Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice is calling for walkers from across Birmingham to join in with the annual Dorridge & Knowle Lions Festive Walk which takes place on Tuesday 27th December at Baddesley Clinton National Trust House. Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice has been chosen as one of 3 charities to benefit from proceeds raised by this event and other activities throughout 2017.  The Knowle and Dorridge Lions selected the Hospice as a beneficiary after hearing about the good work that the Hospice does in the Birmingham, Sandwell and Solihull community in supporting individuals and families living with a terminal illness. The Hospice has been chosen as Charity of the Year for 2017 alongside Prostate Cancer UK and Motor Neurone Disease Association.

“It means so much to us that the Lions have chosen Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice and our Hospice at Home Service as one of the beneficiaries of their fundraising this year”, said Lucy Watkins, Events Manager at Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice. “It seems few people realise we offer this service across Greater Birmingham. The festive walk is our first event with the Lions and we hope that families will add the event to their Christmas calendar and join us for what promises to be a great family day out and fundraising opportunity.”

“Last year 1800 walkers from across the Midlands stepped out in really muddy walking conditions to burn off the Christmas calories and donated a record of over £9,000 on the day,” said Lions President Richard Buckley. “As usual there will be no charge to take part, so add it on your Festive calendar now, tell your friends and relatives and bring a car full.”

There will be a choice of 3 new sign-posted circular routes of 3, 6 and 9 miles, all passing through beautiful countryside using country lanes, public footpaths and canal towpaths with pubs along the way.  The walk is free to take part in and all ages are welcome. Participants are encouraged to get their efforts sponsored or to make a donation on the day.

Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice is an independent adult hospice providing free end of life care and support for over 1,200 individuals and their families, carers and loved ones across Birmingham and Sandwell. It costs over £8 million per year to run the Hospice services and over half of these running costs come from voluntary incomes.
