August marked 100 years since the birth of the late Activist, author and playwright, James Baldwin, and the MyBB Education Bookclub will be celebrating the occasion with a special event at Birmingham’s Legacy Centre of Excellence.
The event will feature a talk by Birmingham City University’s Professor Kehinde Andrews, who will reflect on the significance of Baldwin’s life and work both historically and for the present day. All attendees are encouraged to bring along their favourite Baldwin text to share their insights, but those new to his work, are still welcome to come along and learn something about this significant writer who has contributed so much to explorations of race, identity and the human spirit.
People are also encouraged to visit the MyBookbasket shop based at 144 Potter’s Lane, in Aston, in Birmingham, to view a special Baldwin display (also available online) with some of his key texts. Tickets for the Anniversary Bookclub can be booked in-store and online, with each participant able to receive a free commemorative gift on the day of the event - Thursday 12th September, from 7.00pm to 9.00pm.
