An education expert at student recruitment marketing agency Think Orion, recommends that students do not falsify their work experience in order to succeed in the competitive graduate job market.
Manno Notermans, CEO of Think Orion, spoke on the topic of inaccurate CVs, offering the following advice: “Whilst it may be tempting to lie or exaggerate your work experience on your CV in order to secure your dream role, dishonesty is more likely to damage your employment prospects.
“Employers have access to more advanced background checks, LinkedIn profiles, and industry networks than ever before, meaning any discrepancies in your employment history are likely to be quickly uncovered. Not only will this hinder your chance of getting a job if caught, but falsifying a CV can lead to serious challenges in the workplace.
“If a candidate misrepresents their skills or experience, they may struggle to perform once hired, leading to stress, poor job performance, and job loss. Instead of exaggerating their employment history, graduates should focus on demonstrating the genuine skills they have acquired through their degrees, internships, volunteering roles or other initiatives.
“Transferable skills, a strong work ethic, and a commitment to development are far more powerful than inflating experience. Integrity and honesty form the basis of a successful and sustainable career.
“In the long run, it’s not about landing just any job, it’s about building a reputation that will open doors for years to come.”
