A unique emblem created to commemorate the upcoming coronation of King Charles III features on an exclusive range of newly released gold sovereigns - the first range in history created in honour of a British monarch's coronation. As the first British monarch to be crowned in the 21st century, The King Charles III Coronation Gold Sovereign Range released by gold sovereign specialists Hattons of London, will be the first in history to carry the ‘Coronation Emblem’ - a completely new design created specially to celebrate this significant moment in British history.
While His Majesty the King is the ninth monarch to have sovereigns bearing his portrait, he is the very first for whom specially designed sovereigns have been created in commemoration of his coronation. The reverse of each coin will bear the intricate ‘Coronation Emblem’ which pays tribute not only to the King’s love of the natural world, but to the four countries that make up the United Kingdom.
Featuring the St Edward’s crown in the centre, formed of the traditional floral motifs of each of the home nations, surrounded by roses to represent England, Scottish thistles, Welsh daffodils and Irish shamrocks, the design is encircled by the words ‘King Charles III Coronation 6th May 2023’. The obverse of each coin features a new portrait of His Majesty, created by celebrated artist Jody Clark, the designer of the fifth and final portrait of Her Majesty the Queen which in a tradition dating back to the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660, will face the opposite way to his mother Queen Elizabeth II.
This collection is even more notable when you consider that in the coronation year of Queen Elizabeth II, a time at which Britain was emerging from post-war austerity, no gold coinage had been minted since the 1930’s meaning that no gold sovereigns were created at all to commemorate the event. Minted in 22 carat gold, the proof quality sovereigns in the King Charles III Coronation Gold Sovereign Range are struck in extremely limited numbers to reflect the unique global significance of the event. This includes denominations such as the One-Eighth sovereign – the first of its kind to feature a design created specifically to commemorate a coronation. Only 4,999 have been minted.
The range follows hot on the heels of Hattons of London’s first ever King Charles collections, the 2023 King Charles III Greatest Monarchs range and the recent King Charles III Accession Sovereign range, which have become two of the fastest selling collections in the company’s history.
Simon Mellinger, Managing Director of Hattons of London said: “As the world prepares to see His Majesty King Charles III crowned in just a few short weeks, an event of such global magnitude, we feel that the uniqueness of the King Charles III Coronation Gold Sovereign Range truly encompasses the significance of this once in a lifetime event.
“Bringing to market not only the very first gold sovereigns in 200 years to be created specifically to celebrate the coronation of a British monarch, but the first ever to feature the specially designed ‘Coronation Emblem’, makes the range a particularly significant one and one that we feel acts as the perfect permanent anchor for an event that will long live in our collective memory as a country. Following the incredible success of our first two King Charles ranges for which we have experienced unprecedented demand, we would urge people to act fast to avoid disappointment.”
