A creative schoolchild has put his artistic skills to good use by designing a sign to warn motorists of the need to slow down in Kings Heath High Street. Harry James Lee, a Year 1 pupil at Colmore Infant and Nursery School, in Kings Heath, designed the winning sign in a competition for schoolchildren organised by Birmingham City Council. His design now adorns a ‘Welcome to Kings Heath – SLOW DOWN’ sign in the High Street which will warn motorists to reduce their speed when 20mph limits come into force in various locations across the city.
He was presented with his sign during a school assembly, when pupils were also taught about the importance of road safety ahead of the summer holidays. Councillor Stewart Stacey, cabinet member for transport and roads at Birmingham City Council, said: “Firstly, I would like to congratulate Harry on winning the competition, which was a great way of engaging our younger citizens and raising awareness of our important road safety campaign.
“Secondly, I would like to remind motorists that although the 20mph limits do not come into force until the autumn, we are now in the school holiday period, which means more children out and about. I would therefore urge all drivers to be extra vigilant, particularly in built-up and residential areas, and stick to the legal limits because we want all our children to return to school in September.”
