As flu cases rise across the region, health leaders in Wolverhampton are urging everyone who is eligible to come forward for their flu vaccination as soon as possible.
With flu infections hitting the NHS over a month earlier than last year, and case numbers already three times higher than the same time in 2024, data shows that just under two-thirds of eligible residents in the Black Country are yet to receive their flu jab. Councillor Obaida Ahmed, the City of Wolverhampton Council's Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Community, said: "Getting vaccinated remains the best way to protect yourself, your loved ones, and those you care for from serious illness this winter.
"With colder weather fast approaching, now is the time to act – before viruses begin to circulate more widely." John Denley, Wolverhampton's Director of Public Health, added: "We've seen an early start to the flu season this year, with cases three times as high as they were this time last year.
“These viruses can cause serious illness, especially in people who are more vulnerable, but by getting vaccinated now, you’ll help protect yourself and those around you through the winter months.” Those eligible to receive the flu vaccine include all adults aged 65 years and over, all children aged two to three as of 31 August 2025, pregnant women, and frontline health and social care staff, including those working in care homes for older adults.
Flu vaccinations are free of charge and available through GP practices, local pharmacies, and mobile vaccination clinics operating in Wolverhampton and across the Black Country, including one in Queen Square, Wolverhampton. Primary and secondary school children are also eligible for the free flu vaccine and will be offered this in school.
Parents and carers are encouraged to return consent forms or contact Vaccination UK on 01902 200077 to provide verbal consent. Children who are home educated or who may have missed their in-school vaccination can book to attend a community catch-up clinic – the next is taking place on Saturday (22 November) from 9am-1pm at Graiseley Family Hub, Pool Street, Wolverhampton WV2 4NE. To book, please contact Vaccination UK.
Sally Roberts, Chief Nursing Officer and Deputy Chief Executive Officer for NHS Black Country Integrated Care Board (ICB), said: “Whether you’re a member of the public, a patient, or a healthcare worker, I’d strongly encourage everyone who is eligible to come forward for their flu vaccination.”
