Students at Walsall College are benefiting from the latest technology after a £300,000 investment in new IT equipment across all of its campuses. The new equipment includes around 700 PCs, 60 high-spec PCs compatible with the latest industry-standard software, 200 19-inch LCD monitors and a 3D printer, as well as the latest software packages.

The college’s new £11m Hub, a community venue for business, sport and entrepreneurs, has also been kitted out with a new state of the art wireless network, to help facilitate the running of conferences, events and meetings at the centre.

Jayne Holt, Assistant Principal for Learning Services, at Walsall College said: “Technology has evolved hugely over the last few years and IT skills have become essential in nearly all industries, from health and social care to the creative sector. So this investment in the latest technology is vital in helping us to ensure our students are job ready when they graduate and they have the skills that employers are looking for.”

Following the college’s investment in a new 3D printer, two Engineering students have sparked a new business venture. Ashley Mullen and Artjoms Semjonovs, both aged 17, have joined forces to set up ReSpace, a commercial business manufacturing 3D products.

They are being supported by the college’s Connect programme, a new initiative which provides budding entrepreneurs in the borough with the opportunity to gain the skills and confidence they need to set up and run their own successful business.
