The Jamaican government's Generation Procurement Entity (GPE) will go back to market for the supply of 300MW from renewable energies.

Science, energy, telecommunications and transport minister Daryl Vaz made the announcement before lawmakers during his 2025-26 sectoral debate presentation, Jamaica Information Service reported. The 300MW would be in addition to a call for 220MW expected this year, with the latter due online in 2027-28.

A GPE official told BNamericas that a definitive launch date for the new call has not been set. In a first process for 100MW, GPE selected Wigton Wind Farm and Sunterra Energy Jamaica to develop solar parks for 49.8MW and 50MW, respectively.

According to Vaz, Jamaica is on track to meeting its goal of generating 50% of electricity from renewables by 2030, with sources such as solar and wind accounting for 12.5% of the mix as of this month. In addition, he highlighted that 100MW from renewables are due online this financial year and 130MW from Jamaica Public Service (JPS) in 2027-28.

The minister also announced that JPS plans to spend 13.2bn Jamaican dollars (US$83mn) over 10 years to improve its technical and commercial operations.
