Pupils from a local primary school in Birmingham have won a competition to name the suites at a brand-new care home in Erdington.

Keen for names with cultural or historical significance to the area, the team at Care UK’s Elderflower Grange teamed up with Abbey Catholic Primary School as part of its suite naming competition.

The suites currently being built at the care home on Orphanage Road have been named after cherished parks and places in and around Erdington. The chosen names are Richmond, Rookery and Sorrel, named after beloved green spaces, and Sutton and Witton, which evoke local areas around Birmingham.

Elderflower Grange will be divided into five suites, each comprising a number of bedrooms and a lounge for residents. This encourages the creation of close-knit communities within the home and provides space for group activities. The purpose-built care home – which is expected to welcome the first residents in April 2026 – will offer full-time residential, dementia and nursing care, as well as short-term respite care, for up to 77 older people, while creating 95 new jobs.

Katherine Reidy, Reading Lead at Abbey Catholic Primary School, said: “Our pupils had so much fun looking into the history of our local area to come up with the suite names. We can’t wait to see the home when it’s complete and build long-lasting friendships with residents.”

Justin Daley, Development Project Manager at Care UK, said: “Picking the suite names for a new home is one of the key milestones in preparation for opening, so it was important that the community were involved in the decision.

“All of the suggestions we received were of a very high quality, making our decision a difficult one. Ultimately, we felt using the names from the local area, which resonate with the residents of Erdington, is an excellent way to reflect the connections we hope to establish at Elderflower Grange.

“We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who took the time to submit an entry and to the Abbey Catholic Primary School pupils for coming up with the winning suite names!”

Designed to allow residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence, Care UK’s new Elderflower Grange care home will incorporate plenty of space for leisure activities and hobbies, with its own cinema room, hair and beauty salon and pub. The layout of the building will be configured into a series of individual suites, each having a dedicated lounge/dining room to help facilitate the creation of close-knit communities. Full-time residential and dementia care will be provided, as well as short-term respite care.
