Ping pong enthusiasts from across the midlands battled the sweltering heat last week, smashing their way through Bullring's first ever community table tennis tournament. Twelve bat-wielding teams participated in the frenzied contest, including the Hamstead Table Tennis Club, and local football team Lozell's Strikers.

It was two teams from Birmingham's Chinese Community Centre who battled it out in the final, but it was team rainbow, Calvin Cheung and Jack Zhao, who walked away with a £200 gift card and a £500 donation for a charity of their choice.

Bullring Marketing Manager Maggie Foggett said, "Our first ever ping pong tournament and was very well recieved today here in Bullring. It was great to see so many people take part – it really was a fantastic show of community spirit and a lot of fun.

"With Wimbledon fever in full swing, the tournament provided the perfect opportunity for people to come down and give Murray a run for his money. There was some real talent on display today, so hopefully it's something we can introduce as an annual event."
