The Nigeria Government has commenced the enforcement of mandatory vaccination against Covid-19 for all civil servants.

The enforcement comes amid fears of the new Omicron coronavirus variant. At the gate of the federal secretariat in Abuja crowds of people were locked out of their offices as they were asked to present proof of their vaccinations.

Outspoken professional basketball player Enes Kanter has legally changed his name to Enes Kanter Freedom to celebrate becoming a US citizen.

Swiss-born, Turkish-raised Kanter, 29, tweeted a video of his citizenship ceremony. He recited the oath using his new name.

American-born French performer Joséphine Baker will be entered into Paris' Panthéon mausoleum, making her the first Black woman to receive the honour. The Panthéon is a burial place for celebrated French icons such as scientist Marie Curie and writer Victor Hugo. Baker will be just the sixth woman to join some 80 national heroes.

When Indian PM Narendra Modi announced the repeal of three controversial farm laws after a year of protests, it followed after thousands of farmers had camped at Delhi's borders, since last November, and dozens dying from heat, cold and Covid.

They said that the laws will allow the entry of private players in farming and that will hurt their income. The announcement marks a major U-turn as the government had not taken any initiative to talk to farmers in recent months.

The World Health Organization is "very worried" about the spread of Covid-19 in Europe as the continent battles a fresh wave of infections.
