In recognition of her record-breaking career in track and field, a well-known road in Jamaica is set to be renamed, in honour of one of the world’s greatest ever sprinters in the history of the sport.

Under a ruling set out by the KSAMC (Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation) Ashoka Road, in Waterhouse, Kingston, will be rebranded ‘Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce Drive’, marking her unwavering dedication and contribution to the community there - and the wider Jamaica. Byron Clarke, Councillor for the Waterhouse Division, moved the resolution during a meeting of the council at the Marcus Garvey Council Chamber in downtown Kingston.

Born and raised on Ashoka Road, Fraser-Pryce has invested, heavily, in the lives of many young athletes throughout the country with her Pocket Rocket Foundation providing major assistance, through scholarships and grants alike.

“Shelly-Ann is fully deserved of this honour,” said Cllr. Clark. “This is to acknowledge her determination, commitment, resilience, patriotic favour and willingness to serve her country and community.

“She embraces life with a passion of purpose through hard work, philosophy and an unwavering spirit.”

“Her greatness and worthiness for this recognition cannot be defined solely on the basis of her accomplishment on the track; her true value transcends athleticism,” he added. Mayor of Kingston, Councillor Andrew Swaby added: “Plans are underway to celebrate the athlete’s work and legacy.”

He went on to add that discussions have been underway, including with with the Civic Committee, her former school, Wolmers’ Girls’ High, and members of the Pocket Rocket Foundation. Fraser-Pryce announced that she will retire after the 2024 Paris Olympics to spend more time with her family.
