Fountainbridge student Sam Downing has racked up an impressive achievement for his CV – winning the Student of the Year for Engineering at Edinburgh College. Downing, 21, from the city centre area, was praised for his commitment to his new profession at the Prize Giving ceremony in June. A capacity 300 strong audience heard lecturer Gary David Paterson praise the student’s hard work and positive attitude.  “Sam continually produced an excellent standard of work in all engineering aspects and thoroughly deserves this accolade,” said Paterson.  Sam received his trophy from Ian Hay, training manager for Scottish engineering giant MacTaggart Scott from nearby Loanhead in Midlothian.

Edinburgh College has a strong relationship with the Scottish engineering specialists, which has contributed towards the MacTaggart Scott & Co. Ltd, Hydraulic and Pneumatics Lab at the college’s Midlothian campus and offers work placements for college students.
