World No.1, Jannik Sinner, overcame second seed, Alexander Zverev in the Australian Open final, which made him Italy's first three-time Grand Slam champion, after extending his career-best winning streak to 21 matches.
Winning his second consecutive title there, his 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 victory saw him continue the imperious winning streak, which led him to the top of the world rankings he has been at since the end of 2024. The 23-year-old, who, it has to be said, has been the subject of an ongoing doping case, was simply unbreakable, as he enhanced a 30-2 winning Slams record since his first Melbourne title, a year ago.
On social media, he wrote: ‘Taking this trophy home for a second time feels absolutely unreal!!!!
‘To my team and all of you who’ve cheered me on from every corner of the world – thank you! Huge respect to @AlexZverev for an incredible match.’
Sinner replaced Novak Djokovic as Number 1., in 2024, since when, he has won a record-equalling 47 of his first 50 matches as the top ranked men's player, matching Bjorn Borg and Jimmy Connors. Sinner is now the first player to claim 10 consecutive straight-sets wins over ATP Top 10 opponents since they were published in 1973, and is the fourth player in the last 35 years not to face a single break point in a Grand Slam final.
