A group of learners at Lyndon School in Solihull have donated books for customers to read to support the National Year of Reading.

The National Year of Reading was officially launched by the Department for Education and the National Literacy Trust last week, inviting everybody to ‘Go All In’ with reading. Eight learners, who have roles in school as Lyndon Library Ambassadors, visited the cafe, donating books for customers to read.

The Ambassadors also spent some time reading and enjoying refreshments as a reward for their hard work helping in the school library. The Lyndon Library Ambassadors are a small group of young people who are committed to ensuring wider access to the school library.

They support the school librarian with administration but also through supporting other readers to find the right books for them. The increasing popularity of the school library is partly because of their efforts promoting reading across our school.

The books in the cafe will enable those who might not have access to them at home to borrow books and encourage reading, as part of Lyndon’s commitment to both raising literacy levels for their learners and the local community. Syreeta Kapswara, Head of School at Lyndon, commented: “Our Library Ambassadors highlight the impact that learners can have on their Lyndon Learner Journey.

“As leaders in our school, they help others altruistically and ensure that everybody in our school community has the best experience of reading for pleasure. We are very proud of their contribution and look forward to seeing them become life-long readers and leaders.”

Miya in Year 7 said: “It was very fun and nice to take a break, to have a hot chocolate, read a book and donate some books to the community.”
