Interior Design students have put forward their creative ideas and could see their room designs turned into reality at the Rock Centre in Walsall.

Based within a church, the Rock Centre provides serviced office space to a range of businesses and community groups in the borough and called on the expertise of students to help in coming up with designs for two of its spaces.

The live industry brief, set by directors at the centre Ian Evans and Reef Lawless, tasked level 3 students with designing an office and a 100 sq m multi-function room, incorporating a luxurious hotel look whilst maintaining a durable and sustainable space to meet the demands of a diverse client base.

After visiting the centre, the budding designers took all aspects of the room design into consideration including décor, flooring, lighting, electrical plans and furniture in their proposals.

Students had the opportunity to present their ideas to the company directors when they visited the college last month.

Following their visit, Ian Evans commented: “We are very impressed with the ideas that have been generated and the students have paid great attention to detail in the designs.

“Our plan now is to look at the designs in more depth and see what will work for us in the space, before we reveal to the students which ideas we will be taking forward and implementing in the centre.”

Interior Design Lecturer, Tracy Watkins-Smythe commented: “This project has enabled students to develop and showcase a wide range of skills, from creating mood boards and technical drawings, to using software used by industry professionals.

“It’s also been a great chance for students to gain experience working to a client brief and with a budget.”
