Sir Lenny Henry will emphasise that “education is a right, not an accident of birth”, when he formally accepts his role as Chancellor of Birmingham City University this evening (Tuesday 22 November). Referring to his own experience of not going to university until later in life, Sir Lenny will highlight the transformative impact of education and what he hopes to achieve with his role at the institution over the next five years.

Staff and students at a Staffordshire special school are feeling more secure after Warrior Doors installed a new high-security door, donated by the company. Brett Barratt, managing director of Birmingham-based Warrior Doors, along with his team designed, manufactured and installed the high-security door – worth thousands of pounds – in double-quick time for Chasetown Community School, Burntwood, after it was targeted by burglars three times in just three weeks.

Walsall College is inviting prospective students to come and find out about its range of vocational courses and the careers they lead to at its latest Open Day on Wednesday 23rd November, between 4pm and 8pm. Careers are available in everything from plumbing to hairdressing and law to childcare with expert tutors on hand to plot your journey to employment. School leavers and adult learners will be able to learn more about one of the West Midlands’ most successful further education colleges, which was rated outstanding by Ofsted in 2013.

A group of young people, not in education, employment or training, celebrated successfully completing a Prince’s Trust employability programme at a special presentation evening in Birmingham. The 11 young people, aged between 16 and 25, were taking part in Team, a 12-week personal development programme run by The Prince’s Trust. It is designed to help young people gain skills, work experience and self-belief, as well as achieve a nationally-recognised qualification.

Qatar Airways has officially opened its new Oryx International School, a premium education facility dedicated to the children of the airline’s employees. The school reflects Qatar Airways’ commitment to its staff, by ensuring both employees and their children receive the first-class training and education needed to excel. The school was opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by His Excellency Dr. Mohammed Al Hammadi, Minister of Education and Higher Education and Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker.

As part of Anti-bullying Week (Monday 14 November to Friday 18 November) Sandwell Council’s SHAPE Programme with West Midlands Police are delivering workshops to children and young people in schools. Children will take part in interactive workshops, games and watch videos with the intention of getting them to understand what bullying is and how to report it. The workshops are taking place in a selection of both primary and high schools across Sandwell.
