Whilst the Lionesses may have just been pipped to the trophy by Spain, they have earned the admiration of fans all around the world, on TV and on social media - the England Instagram account surpassed 1 million followers after Sunday night's final, gaining 213,720 in the past 30 days.

With that in mind, BestBettingSites.com sought to find out which Lioness gained the most popularity on Instagram from the competition. To find that out, they used Social Blade to determine the following of each England player, before the competition started, during key events and after the World Cup ended.

  • Lauren James is the Lioness with the biggest social media growth – 122,430 new Instagram followers in the past 30 days.

The data shows Lauren James is the Lioness who gained the most followers since the World Cup began - a whopping 122,430 supporters on Instagram! Currently at a total number of 638,000 followers (the 6th highest on her team), key moments contributing to her increase include immediately after the final (12,905 increase) and when she received a red card against Nigeria (12,812 increase). 

In second place is Alessia Ruso, who gained 117,420 new Instagram followers in the past 30 days. The great Lioness who scored 3 times for the English team during this year’s World Cup has noticed the biggest surge in followership one day after the Semi-Finals when she gained 22,897 new followers. 

In third place we have Chloe Kelly, who gained 91,380 new followers in the past 30 days. The Lioness scored once during this World Cup during the Group Stage against China, however, she noticed the biggest growth in followership after the World Cup ended – that day gaining 26,610 new followers. The day after the Semi-Finals was also a good day for Kelly’s social media, gaining 13,709 on Instagram after her penalty score knocked Nigeria out of the competition. 

Ella Toone comes in fourth place, with an 85,260 surge in followership in the past 30 days. Toone showed her determination and skills in the Semi-Finals when she scored against the Australian team, that match gaining her 24,999 new followers on Instagram. She also rose in popularity right after the Women’s World Cup ended, noticing a growth of 21,948 followers on her social media account. 

In fifth place comes Lucy Bronze, who gained 71,250 followers in the past 30 days. Bronze noticed the biggest surge in popularity after the Semi-Finals when she gained 12,215 new followers. She is also the 4th most popular player on the team, with a whopping 667,000 total followers on Instagram, as seen in the table below.

  4. Data was gathered on the 21st of August and it is accurate as of then.
