The City of Wolverhampton Council is helping unemployed people get back into work through a ‘Fast Track into Cleaning’ programme. The council’s Economic Inclusion Service has teamed up with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), Wolverhampton College, Wolverhampton Council Cleaning & Catering Department, YOO Recruit, Wolverhampton University and the Princes Trust to deliver the scheme.
The two-week course has just been completed by 16 participants, aged between 22 and 56, with plans to repeat the project. They received work-related training, work experience, registration to the council’s own agency - YOO Recruit, and a guaranteed interview with the university for cleaning jobs at the end of it.
Councillor John Reynolds, Cabinet Member for City Economy, said: “This is an excellent initiative to help unemployed people in the area find a way back into work. “Working as a partnership provides those on the programme with a valuable insight and first-hand knowledge of doing the job through work experience.
“This partnership approach has really been beneficial in supporting people into work and the Economic Inclusion team will be offering further programmes in the future.” Course participant Angela Kerr, added: “I would recommend anyone to do this course because it helps build up your confidence and teaches you things you thought you knew – but didn’t. “I feel more prepared for job interviews now and the challenges ahead.”
