Creative young people have been rewarded after a competition was held to design commemorative cakes for a children’s charity. Staff from the Barnardo’s regional office in Halesowen marked the charity’s 150th anniversary with a Family Fun Day in September. Around 2,000 residents enjoyed the event, which included fairground rides, pony-rides, a climbing wall, circus skills, live music and dancing.

Children and young people were also invited to design their own cake decorations to mark the anniversary.

The winners were Sophie Kedwards, aged eight and from Stourbridge, who received a new scooter, and Harvey Vincent, aged 12 and from Halesowen, who received a new skateboard.

The prizes were donated by The Skate Hut.

The cake design competition was organised by Wendy Hemsley, Manager of the Barnardo’s Midlands Employment, Training & Skills (ETS) service which is based at the charity’s regional office.

She said: “We were delighted to receive more than a hundred entries from children and young people of all ages so it was a difficult decision to pick the winners.

“However, we were really impressed by Sophie and Harvey’s bold and colourful designs.

“Their creations were iced onto cakes which were then enjoyed by the children, their families, staff and other guests when they visited our office to receive their prizes.”
