Colleagues from Birmingham Airport (BHX) and other partner organisations have raised £18,680.91 for Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity by participating in fun run along the airport’s runway.

300 participants from organisations around the airport participated in the Runway Fun Run event on Saturday 22nd November which saw attendees run, walk and dance along the runway to raise funds for BHX’s nominated charity partner. For one night only, attendees were transported back to the 1980s with a retro disco experience, themed event village and a high energy Zumba warm-up.

Taking place in the early hours of the morning, the event was scheduled to coincide with operational downtime on the runway. The successful event follows several significant fundraising achievements at the airport including the hosting of an inaugural charity dinner which raised over £63,000 for the hospital.

The regional transport hub hosted over 400 guests from 44 partner organisations last month for an evening of live entertainment, relaxed dining and fundraising at the Heart of England Conference Centre in Meriden. In June, colleagues from the airport abseiled off the organisation’s head office building, raising an additional £32,668.

Located in Birmingham city centre, the hospital is a leading UK specialist paediatric centre and offers expert care to over 100,000 children and young people from across the country every year. Commenting on the fundraising achievement, Tom Denton, Head of Sustainability, at Birmingham Airport said: “We’re absolutely delighted that colleagues from across the airport and beyond joined us in participating in our Runway Fun Run challenge in support of our nominated charity partner, Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

“This exciting themed event provided attendees with the rare opportunity to run the entire length of our 3km runway, all to raise money for a good cause. In total, our brave attendees fundraised just under £19,000 for the hospital – a remarkable achievement that firmly places us on track to exceed our pledged partnership target.

“We thank all of our colleagues and participants from third-party organisations for their fundraising and contributions, and we look forward to sharing details of our forthcoming charity events in the near future.” Katie Harris, Corporate Partnerships Manager at Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity, said: “Birmingham Airport’s Runway Fun Run was such a fantastic and unique event.

“It was great fun to be a part of and fabulous to see so many participants taking part to support our brave patients. We’re incredibly grateful for BHX’s continued support throughout this special partnership, which is already making the world of difference for countless sick kids and their families.”
