Brazilian great Pele's condition is improving in hospital, say doctors in Sao Paulo.

The 82-year-old world renounced legend was admitted last Tuesday, before, on Saturday, reassuring his fans that he was improving by the day and getting stronger and with a lot of hope.

It followed a report in his native country that he was beginning end-of-life care after not responding to chemotherapy. The three-time World Cup winner has received regular treatment since having a tumour removed from his colon in September 2021.

A statement from his doctors read: "The patient continues to show progressive improvement in his general condition, in particular the respiratory infection. He remains in a standard room, with stable vital signs, conscious and with no new complications."

Following news of the 3-time World Cup winner’s health, Brazil players paid tribute to Pele after their 4-1 last-16 win over South Korea at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar on Monday when they proudly unveiled and carried a giant banner with his name and image on it.

Brazil face Croatia in the quarter-finals on Friday.
