The call is out to all Midlanders! ‘Let’s spare Just One More pound to help Cure Leukaemia fund Just One More specialist research nurse – and save lives. To mark international Blood Cancer Awareness Month, Cure Leukaemia is calling for the region to get behind its biggest-ever community fundraising campaign, Just One More.

It’s about having fun while helping the Birmingham-based blood cancer charity raise at least £40,000 to fund Just One More specialist research nurse and deliver potentially lifesaving treatments to more Midlands patients. The campaign sets out to prove that small donations can make a big impact in bringing hope to blood cancer sufferers across the region.

Cure Leukaemia is urging all sections of society – from businesses to schools, gyms to nurseries, community groups to the wider public  – to devise creati’ve fundraising ideas throughout September that will generate donations of Just One More pound. From simply wearing something red for a day and bake sales to gruelling sporting challenges and fun social nights, everyone can get involved.

And there will be prizes for the wackiest fundraising ideas! Launching the Just One More Campaign were specialist research nurse Donna Walsh, and former patient Barbara Waller, who survived blood cancer thanks to a clinical drugs trial administered by Cure Leukaemia-funded nurses. Donna said: “September is Blood Cancer Awareness Month, which raises awareness of what blood cancers are, who they affect and how people can help.

Just One More is a fantastic idea and I’ll be joining my fellow specialist research nurses in coming up with fundraising activities. It is all about having fun while, at the same time, helping blood cancer patients survive this horrific disease. Huge strides are being made in the world of blood cancer but too many people are still dying. To combat this, we need more nurses so that more patients have access to potentially lifesaving treatments.

I would urge as many Midlanders as possible to get involved and help us save more lives.” Barbara, from Northfield, Birmingham, added: “I’m living proof of just how important campaigns like Just One More are. If it wasn’t for the specialist research nurses, I wouldn’t be here today. “Just One More aims to raise at least £40,000 to fund a nurse for a year, but with around 1.1million people living in Birmingham alone, wouldn’t it be amazing if we could raise £100,000 in September?”

Cure Leukaemia wants to hear from everyone who will be supporting Just One More during Blood Cancer Awareness Month. They want to know what people are getting up to and they will promote any fundraising activities across their social media channels. They can also provide you with collection tins/buckets, stickers and posters to help you generate those Just One More donations.

Cure Leukaemia funds a network of specialist research nurses to administer clinical trials of potentially lifesaving drugs to leukaemia patients across the Midlands who have exhausted all options on the NHS. The nurses support the work of Cure Leukaemia co-founder, Professor Charlie Craddock, at the world-class Centre for Clinical Haematology, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. Professor Craddock believes a cure for all blood cancers can be found in the next 30 years.
