Three further athletes – Emile Cairess, Mahamed Mahamed and Rose Harvey - have been announced by the British Olympic Association (BOA) as the final marathon athletes selected to compete at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

They join already selected Phil Sesemann, Charlotte Purdue and Calli Hauger-Thackery in Team GB for the marathon events taking place on the 10th and 11th August. After stellar performances at the TCS London Marathon last weekend, Cairess and Mahamed moved to second and third on the UK all-time rankings for the men’s marathon.

Cairess (pic) ran a time of 2:06:46 for third place overall and now only sits behind Sir Mo Farah in the UK all-time list. Mahamed will be another first time Olympian after running a time of 2:07:05 which moved him ahead of 1984 Olympian Steve Jones in the all-time list.

Harvey joins Purdue and Thackery in the women’s marathon following a 2:23:21 clocking at last year’s Chicago Marathon. The 31-year-old, who has earned two top 10 placings in major marathons in recent times, will make her Games debut this summer.

The final athletics team will be announced following the UK Athletics Championships and Trials weekend on 5 July 2024. Team GB Chef de Mission, Mark England said: “I am delighted to welcome Emile, Mahamed and Rose to Team GB for Paris 2024.

“All six marathon athletes selected for the Paris Games are making their Olympic debuts and I am sure that they will relish the opportunity to compete on the iconic streets of Paris, with the women’s marathon, in particular, bringing the Games to close in fitting style.” Olympic Head Coach at UK Athletics, Paula Dunn, said: “Congratulations to Emile, Mahamed and Rose on their selections for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

“It is testament to all their hard work that they have earned their places at a Games for the very first time in their careers. As has been the case with Phil, Charlotte and Calli following their selection earlier in the year, we will be supporting these athletes’ preparations to add the most value in these last 15 weeks before their races on the 10 and 11 August.

“We will continue to engage with them, so they are best prepared for the Games.”
